Context

App Guardian startup was founded before all the companies began to embed parental control inside the devices. The proposal was quite simple: to provide an app that parents could control their kids screen time, and block their devices once screen time was over.
The company was selected to be incubated by Samsung and received two awards: The Samsung Creative Startups Award and Tela Viva Mobile Award (public utility category).
We redesigned the whole app and worked closely with the developers to get both devices (Kids and parents) to be connected. My role: UX/UI Design Lead.

Challenge

One of the manin challenges was to connect the kid device with the parent device and make actions from one device be perceived by the other. The app also have some information for the parents on how much time was spent in each applications or websites.

Discovery

We developed a card sorting to redesign the app taxonomy with some users (kids and parents) to simplify the structure of the kids version and better organize the parent app, some insights we got from the card sorting were:

  • Kids needed a timer before the device was blocked.

  • Parents could not see the kids device, so we could not block the telefone feature, so they could communicate.

  • There were too many functionalities for the parents, but very few for the kids.
